Games Provide the Structure—School Expects Students to Build It
The worksheet may contain only ten questions. But completing it can require far more than answering ten questions.
A student may need to find the assignment, understand the directions, estimate time, locate materials, ignore notifications, choose where to start, monitor progress, tolerate uncertainty, check the work, and submit it in the correct place.
The academic content is only one layer. Around it sits an additional assignment: managing the work.
What cognitive load means
Cognitive load describes the amount of mental processing a task requires at a given moment. Working memory has limited capacity, so task design matters. When directions are unclear, information is scattered, or several decisions must be held in mind at once, more capacity is spent managing the task and less is available for learning.
This does not mean challenge should be removed. Productive challenge belongs in the learning. Unnecessary load comes from avoidable confusion, hidden steps, competing information, and preventable demands on memory.
How games carry part of the load
Games vary, but many are intentionally designed to keep a player oriented. Objectives remain on screen. Tutorials appear when needed. Maps show location. Inventory systems hold information. Difficulty rises in stages. The game responds immediately to an action.
The player still plans, remembers, shifts strategies, controls impulses, and persists. The environment simply carries more of the surrounding mental load. That support makes it easier to spend cognitive energy on the challenge itself.
Where school shifts the load to the student
Schoolwork often assumes that students can independently create the container around the learning. They may need to translate a broad instruction into steps, decide how long each step will take, remember where materials are stored, and move between several platforms.
When a student struggles, adults may focus on the visible output: the blank page, missing assignment, or late submission. The more useful question is what happened before the output. Did the student know where to begin? Could they see the full sequence? Was the submission step treated as part of the task?
Map the assignment before, during, and after
Before
Find it. Read it. Clarify it. Gather what is needed. Choose the first action. Estimate a work interval.
During
Keep the goal visible. Work one step at a time. Mark progress. Ask for help at a defined point. Take a planned reset when needed.
After
Compare the work with the directions. Complete the minimum check. Save it correctly. Submit it. Verify that submission was received.
Write these steps where the student can see them. Externalizing the sequence is not cheating. It lets the environment carry information that otherwise competes with the academic task.
Reduce load without removing ownership
Support should clarify the path, not erase the student's role. A parent can help make the steps visible while the student chooses the order. A teacher can provide a model while the student completes the next example. A checklist can hold the sequence while the student performs it.
Scaffolding is most useful when everyone knows what the support is doing, which part the student owns, and how the support will be adjusted as the skill becomes more reliable.
